Success Stories

Benson presented to Woodside Equine Clinic on July 22nd, 2010 for treatment of mild skin burns and smoke inhalation incurred from a local barn fire. Within a week the skin along his neck, back and rump began to dry out and peel off. He was managed carefully using topical ointments, frequent showers and other medications. Benson’s skin integrity continued to improve throughout his three week stay at the hospital. He was discharged in the middle of August with continued treatment at home. He is currently being ridden and has returned to the hunt field.

JMA Moonshadow is an Arabian filly who was born before her due date, but otherwise appeared normal.  At 3.5 weeks of age, she presented to Woodside Equine Clinic with difficulty swallowing and progressive weakness resulting in an inability to stand on her own.  Her clinical signs fit closely with Botulism, a neuromuscular disease, which can cause a rapidly fatal paralysis.  The disease is caused by ingestion of the Clostridium botulinum toxin, which can be found in the environment.  She was treated with intravenous Botulism anti-toxin and supportive care, including fluid therapy and assisted feeding via an indwelling nasogastric tube.  After two weeks of intensive therapy and round the clock care from our staff and volunteer foal sitters, Shadow regained the ability to swallow and gradually became able to rise and stand on her own.  Today, she is a thriving filly, running and playing at J & M Arabians.

Below are pictures of Shadow in the hospital and at home at J&M Arabians:
