Internal Medicine

Woodside Equine Clinic’s internal medicine department specializes in the critical care and treatment of horses suffering from acute or chronic disease and injury. Our emergency care team is ready to spring into action 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Cases treated include a full spectrum of diseases, from cardiovascular, respiratory, autoimmune, gastro-intestinal and dermatologic conditions to laminitis, neurologic, and toxicologic diseases. Procedures, medications and treatments are constantly updated under the expert direction of Dr. DeWitt, our board-certified internist. A dedicated staff of veterinary technicians and assistants allow us to provide the very best in medical care for the horses of Virginia and for those shipped in from other locations to our state-of-the-art facility.

Medical services offered include diagnosis,

management and treatment of:

  • Neonatal disorders ranging from mild cases of diarrhea to severe cases of maladjustment syndrome – and everything in between.
  • Neurologic disorders including radiography, myelography and cerebral spinal fluid sampling analysis and interpretation.
  • Cardiac disorders ranging from cardiac ultrasonography and electrocardiography (ECG) to treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.
  • Gastrointestinal disorders including abdominal ultrasonography, abdominal paracentesis (abdominal tap), xylose/glucose absorption, etc., as well as intensive care treatment for colitis (diarrhea) and endotoxemia.
  • Respiratory diseases via endoscopy, ultrasonography, radiography, transtracheal aspirate, broncho-alveolar lavage, thoracocentesis, biopsy, etc. Treatment of Inflammatory Airway Disease (IAD) and Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO, heaves) is an area of clinical expertise.
  • Performing and interpreting blood work and collection and analyzing bodily fluids.

Woodside Equine Clinic is properly equipped to provide care for critically ill patients, including intravenous medications and fluid therapy. In addition, an isolation facility is available for those patients with potentially infectious and contagious diseases. As these patients are often very ill, the isolation facility allows us to not only protect our recovering hospitalized patients from being exposed to a potentially contagious disease, but also to provide the optimum care for the very ill.
