About Us

Woodside Equine Clinic was founded in the late 1960’s by Drs. Olive Britt and Milton Kingsbury. At that time, they were two of the only veterinarians in the state working solely on horses. Dr. Britt was one of the pioneers in equine medicine as a female practitioner. She was also the first veterinarian to attend to our local hero, Secretariat.

In 1989, Dr. Scott Anderson purchased Woodside from Dr. Kingsbury. The practice was moved to a new facility in 1991. Since then, Woodside has grown in size and services offered. We strive to keep up with the ever changing field of veterinary medicine while offering the caring service of our predecessors.

Our practice has put together a team of exceptional veterinary specialists who are Diplomates in Surgery, Internal Medicine and Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction). A diplomate is a veterinarian who has performed a 2-3 year residency in a specialty, and has passed a rigorous exam given by the national board in that specialty. These specialists are considered experts in their fields, and Woodside is one of only a few practices in the U.S. with a surgeon, internist and theriogenologist on staff.

Dr. Douglass Berry is the chief surgeon at Woodside. He joined our practice in February 2007 after serving as the senior surgeon at Virginia Tech for three years. In all, he brings over ten years of surgical experience and has helped prepare our surgical facility with the necessary equipment and staff. With the arrival of Dr. Berry, Woodside began offering colic surgery. We know that time can be a critical factor in the survival of a colicky horse and we are excited to help put an end to the long haul with a sick or injured horse and to offer this service which can save more horses’ lives.

Dr. Shane DeWitt arrived at Woodside Equine Clinic in August 2008. As an internal medicine specialist, he has significant expertise in diagnosing and treating critical horses. Prior to his arrival, Dr. DeWitt spent 4 years as a faculty member in the large animal department at Kansas State University. Along with a knowledge base that includes gastro-enterology, respiratory disorders and emergency care, Dr. DeWitt has a special interest in critical foal care which makes him a valuable asset to Woodside's already established foaling services.

Dr. David Stanford completed his training and became a Diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists in August 2007. His expertise in the field of equine reproduction has allowed Woodside to elevate it's support and care for clients in areas including breeding, embryo transfer and semen collection and shipping. He has also been an integral part in the development of Woodside's foaling out services.

Overall, we have assembled an excellent professional and support staff for the care of critical cases. This consists of 11 veterinarians, 2 in-house licensed veterinary technicians, 4 in-house assistants, 3 ambulatory assistants, and 1 ambulatory licensed veterinary technician. Their experience comes from time spent in other critical care facilities and at Woodside. Our team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide your horses the best care.
