About Us

Woodside Equine Clinic was founded in the late 60’s by Drs. Olive Britt and Milton Kingsbury. They were two of the veterinarians in the state working solely on horses. Due to the closest referral clinic being five hours away at New Bolton, their services were demanded throughout a large area of Virginia. Dr. Britt is one of the pioneers in equine medicine as a female practitioner. She was also the first veterinarian to attend our local hero, Secretariat. As the practice grew there were as many as five veterinarians working at Woodside in the early years. Due to the distance to referral clinics the practice offered many services including surgery and lameness clinics with farriers. Woodside Equine Clinic was started in 1989 with a change of ownership. The practice was moved to a new facility in 1991. Since then the practice has grown in size and services offered. We strive to keep up with the ever changing field of veterinary medicine while offering the caring service of our predecessors.

After Woodside began its referral practice in 2006, colic surgery has been on the horizon.  Our practice has put together a team of exceptional veterinary specialists who are Diplomates in Surgery, Internal Medicine and Emergency/Critical Care. A diplomate is a  veterinarian who has performed a 2-3 year  residency in a specialty, (such as surgery or   internal medicine), and has passed a rigorous exam given by the national board in that specialty.  These specialists are considered  experts in their fields.  Time can be a critical factor in the survival of a colicky horse and we are excited to help put an end to the long haul with a sick or injured horse and to offer this service which can save more horses’ lives.

Dr. Douglass Berry is the chief surgeon at Woodside.  He joined our practice in February 2007 after serving as the senior surgeon at  Virginia Tech for three years.  In all, he brings over ten years of abdominal surgical experience and has helped prepare our surgical     facility with the necessary equipment and staff.

Dr. Fairfield Bain will be working with Dr. Berry to provide the best care to the patients.  As an internist, he has significant expertise in diagnosing, treating critical horses and in abdominal ultrasound.  Ultrasound is a great diagnostic tool for examining abdominal   problems and aiding in treatment decisions as well as whether or not to perform surgery.  In addition, Dr. Bain has been a Diplomate of the American College of Emergency/Critical Care since 1996.

We have assembled an excellent professional and support staff for the care of critical cases. This consists of 3 interns, 5 technicians and a number of assistants. Their experience comes from time spent in other critical care facilities and at Woodside. Our team is available 24 hours, 7days a week to provide your horses the best care. We are proud to bring colic treatment and surgery to central and eastern Virginia. Although colic is never a welcome condition, we look forward to being able to help you when you are in need.
