Our emergency care team is ready to spring into action 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Cases treated include a full spectrum of diseases, from cardio-respiratory, autoimmune, gastro-intestinal and dermatologic conditions, to laminitis, neurological, and toxicologic diseases. Procedures, medications and treatments are constantly updated under the expert direction of our board-certified internist. Continuing education for the staff is part of the ongoing process to provide the very best in medical care for the horses of Virginia and for those shipped in from other locations to our state-of-the-art facility.

These areas include:

- Cardiac disorders-diagnostics including auscultation, ultrasonography and electrocardiography (ECG). Treatment includes conversion of certain arrhythmias

Woodside Equine Clinic is properly equipped to provide care for critically ill patients including intravenous medications and fluid therapy. In addition, an isolation section is available for those patients with contagious diseases such as Salmonella, Rhoddococcus, Rotavirus, and Strangles. An isolation facility allows us to care properly for those patients that are infectious while guaranteeing the safety of the other hospitalized and visiting horses. TheriogenologyOur reproduction center, completed in 2003, was built to provide reproductive services for a wide variety of stallions and broodmares under the direction of David Stanford, DVM, Diplomate ACT.
The collection area was designed to provide a safe and efficient environment for phantom training and stallion collections. An additional stocks room was set up to allow ample room for mares, foals, and equipment.
Adjacent to the collection area and stocks room is our reproductive lab. The location allows for quick and efficient processing of semen and embryos as well as culture and cytology samples.

Alternative Medicine Dr. Scott Anderson completed certification courses in acupuncture in 1991 and chiropractic medicine in 1993. It has been his goal to integrate these forms of medicine with traditional lameness work. He has found the combination to be helpful in assessing and treating the equine athlete.
Sports Medicine Sports medicine is a large and growing part of the practice. We see many cases on an outpatient basis as well as ambulatory. We have a riding ring and varied surfaces for observing lamenesses. We have been employing high-powered, focused shockwave therapy since July of 2002.
Imaging
We are continuously pursuing education and new equipment such as computed radiography, ultrasonography, and thermography. With our radiography (x-ray) equipment we are able to examine the bones of the front leg up to the shoulder, hind leg up to the stifle, and the neck. We are also happy to announce that we have a new radiography machine that enables us to take pictures of your horse's neck, back, or shoulders. Ultrasound allows us to see soft tissue and bone. We use it to evaluate internal organs such as the heart, liver, bowel, and kidneys. Ultrasound is used daily to evaluate ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and bones of the horse's legs, back, and neck as well as other areas of the body.Thermography shows the patterns of heat on the surface of the body. Areas of abnormal heat or cold often demonstrate injuries.
Woodside Equine Clinic constantly updates its imaging equipment with new technology. As a significant clinical passion and interest, advanced ultrasonography techniques and procedures are enabled through the six ultrasound machines al medicine. All of Woodside Equine Clinic's ambulatory vehicles are also well-equipped with portable radiography machines.
Computed Radiography With our new computed radiography capabilities we can show greatly improved detail and clarity to our clients. Therefore, the likelihood of finding a small lesion, such as a fragment or excess calcification increases. Dentistry At Woodside, we believe equine dentistry is an essential part of preventative health care. Dr. Claudia True was taught to use motorized dental equipment in 1998. She continues to update her skills with continuing education. She has also completed a course that included treating periodontal disease, dental radiography, and endodontics. In 2004 we trained all of our veterinarians in the use of motorized equipment to facilitate routine dental floats. Our clients are educated on the importance of dental care through newsletter articles, classes taught at the local community college, and by veterinarians meeting with local riding clubs and 4-H groups.
Ambulatory Services
By looking at the long-term health needs of your horse our aim is to provide your horse with better performance and health and you with fewer emergency visits. In addition to the hospital services offered we will continue to focus on the care of your horse on the farm. With 7 veterinarians on the road and 2 veterinarians on emergency duty every night and weekend we can provide rapid response to your horse’s health needs.
